Ethiopia-Canada Cooperation Office (ECCO)

The Ethiopia-Canada Cooperation Office (ECCO) in Ethiopia is one of the largest in Africa.

The ECCO is distinct from CIDA. (See CIDA website.) The role of the ECCO is to support the initiatives of CIDA and indirectly support the development of the countries of the Horn of Africa. The ECCO is funded by CIDA and is accountable to CIDA and to the Auditor General of Canada.

The ECCO can fulfill a number of roles, with a staff size that is similar to the Embassy, comprising both Canadian and national staff. The Unit has experts who can assist in the areas of food security, good governance and democracy, environment, gender, HIV/AIDS and humanitarian relief. It can provide input to planning, feasibility studies, reviews, project and program monitoring, and evaluation expertise.

The ECCO also has a logistical role, assisting in program delivery by handling transportation, bookings, itineraries for incoming missions, customs clearance of project inputs, etc. It also houses and provides management support to Local Funds in Ethiopia that include The Canada Fund for Local Initiative, the Tsion Dessie Memorial Gender Fund (TDMGF) and the HIV/AIDS Fund.
